aBOUT OUR company

The Bryant Transportation Group, while new in its formation - June 2019 - has leadership with over 100+ years of combined transportation logistics experience.   Our General Manager, Collis Bryant, Jr, is Third Generation in transportation; he began riding on his dad's trucks in 1949......I'll let you do the math concerning his age!  As a middle-schooler while you were outside playing in the yard with your friends, Collis was producing the required "quarterly fuel tax reports" for the family trucking business.  They primarily hauled produce and exempt commodities and followed (really "chased") the produce seasons throughout the country running the trucks to FL, TX, MI, CA as needed to stay busy.  As a teenager, he began driving one of his dad's tractors as soon as he was legally able.  

Collis learned the trucking and truck brokerage business under the tutelage of his parents and transitioned to the "regulated" side of the business in 1975 (deregulation did not occur until the early 80's) to begin running a trucking operation for American Transfreight, Inc., in Franklin, VA.  Moving to the international side of the business, he concentrated primarily on the domestic movement of international cargo for the customs brokerage community working for:

• Romar Transportation, Inc., 1989-1991;
• Manufacturers Consolidation Service (MCS), 1991-1997;
• Cornerstone Systems, Inc.,1997-2019 (retired in May 2019)

This concentration lead him to develop a team that could handle not only domestic FTL and LTL cargo but also port and ramp container drayage, transloading, warehousing, and "out of gauge" (overlength/overwidth/overweight) cargo.  From his office in the Norfolk port area they controlled contract vendors at every major port city in the U.S. and most major ramps.

He developed the reputation as the "go to" person in the customs brokerage community when a project was difficult and required someone with his scope of knowledge to get the work done correctly and on time.  JIT, plant/line shutdown and/or project cargo was the "specialty" of his team.

Below is a postcard from Bryant's Shell Truck Stop (circa 1958-1961).  This was the family's truck stop and we lived on the second floor.

Oldest son Buck (Collis Bryant III) is assisting his dad in this new venture for the family.  He can remember being three years old riding in his daddy's tractor!  As a middle-schooler and teenager, he would help with the loading/unloading of trailers, perform trailer inspections, and "threw plenty of pallets" in the warehouse assisting in the family's trucking operation in Franklin. 

At twenty-one years old, Buck "cut his teeth" as an adult in transportation being trained by his dad in domestic transportation brokerage.  It was still during the age before computers when his dad handed him a three ring binder advising him "to call ALL of the truckers in this binder and find out where they have trucks available so we can help get them loads to move!"

In 1997, Buck assisted Collis in getting the Cornerstone Systems, Inc., operation set up by developing logistical protocols -even mom came out to help us get this going!  Buck moved from the brokerage side of the business to the asset side becoming a terminal manager for a number of intermodal drayage operations in the Norfolk port.
